Women as a Valuable Asset within the Security Sector

This year's edition, taking place between 7-9 November, is focusing on two major topics for the current realm of international security, namely Smart Defence and Women, Peace and Security.

Conference call for participants: Young professionals, junior researchers, recent graduates and current students alike are invited to discuss and share their insights on key aspects of international relations, conflict management and security issues, within a vivid academic environment in the capital of Romania, Bucharest. Academic Coordinator



Dr. Gabriela-Cornelia Horoşanu is an expert in international relations, member of the Scientific Council of UN Youth Association of Romania, former NATO consultant within the Emerging Security Challenges Division and guest lector of the National Defense University. She is currently unfolding her postdoctoral research activity at the ‘Carol Davila’ Medicine and Pharmacy University and ‘Matei Balş’ Institute of Infectious Diseases, also being the executive director of the Infectious Diseases and HIV/AIDS Society. She holds a PhD in Political Sciences, specialized in International Relations, in the area of planning the capabilities for new types of missions, obtained from the National School of Political Sciences and Administrative Studies, as well as a Master’s Degree in the Management of Organizations, focused on the study of terrorist organizations, from the Faculty of Political Sciences of ‘Babeş-Bolyai’ University. She also benefitted from a federal scholarship for postgraduate studies at ETH Zurich in the domain of security studies and artificial intelligence with applications in medicine. Having a background in engineering studies at ‘Institute Nationale Polytechnique Grenoble’ and at the Faculty of Chemical Engineering from ‘Babeş-Bolyai’ University, she was continuously involved in the applied research in AI, genomics, bioterrorism, whilst transferring this expertise in the area of strategy, political planning and international relations. The academic and governmental activity, as well as the constant involvement in the projects of the civil society, constitutes a relevant gateway in disseminating the studies towards the relevant audience. Moreover, the continuous collaboration with NATO specialists, EU institutions, the UN, WHO, FAO, as well as the Embassies of the partner states, grant the assumed credibility and expertise.


Academic Coordinator



Anda – Ilona Șerban is an expert on nuclear disarmament and a senior member of the UN Youth Association of Romania. She is currently the Coordinator of the ICAN (International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons) Romania Bureau and an International Coordinator of Ban All Nukes Generation. Anda holds a Master Degree in Security Studies from the University of Bucharest, a BA in Political Science from National School of Politics and Administrative Studies and a BA in Sociology from the University of Bucharest. Her academic interests, besides disarmament, are in the field of climate change security and human security, with a special focus on systemism as a methodology. Her work includes lobbying, mostly focusing on NATO countries and monitoring international conferences on security issues. During her work for ICAN she collaborated with Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILF). In 2013, Anda was awarded a sponsorship by the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for a research on disarmament education, a joint study in collaboration with Center for Non-proliferation Studies (USA), Research Center for Nuclear Weapons Abolition (Japan), Vienna Center for Disarmament and Non-proliferation (Austria) and Nuclear Age Peace Foundation (USA).

A recent graduate of the University of Bucharest, from which she obtained her BA diploma in Political Science, Cezara is currently pursuing her MA studies at the National School of Political Sciences and Administrative Studies in Bucharest, where she is reading Security and Diplomacy.
She has been activating as a member of the Projects Department of the UN Youth Association of Romania since October 2013, having involved mainly in the Model United Nations projects.
Being very passionate about the academic simulations of the UN negotiations, she has acquired a vast experience in MUNs, in the positions of both delegate and chairperson, and was several times duly awarded for her work in the committees.

Having benefited from the opportunity of studying at the Department of Political Science and International Studies of the University of Birmingham, in England, she got a very acute interest in the study of International Relations and International Security. Nonetheless, her interests include cultural diplomacy, cross-cultural studies, sociology and diplomatic history.

Human Resources Coordinators



Claudia is a second year BA student reading International Affairs and European Studies at the National School of Political Sciences and Administrative Studies in Bucharest. She is particularly interested in both cultural diplomacy and public relations, giving also proof of a strong attachment to volunteering in the field of education and child protection.

At the moment she is Vice-President for External Relations within the UN Youth Association of Romania. She became part of the UNYARo in October 2013 as a member in the Communication Department, she took responsibility of PR coordination at BISMUN 2014 after actively getting involved in organizing some other projects of the Association and also coordinated the UN Youth Summer School on Diplomacy 2014, from the position of project manager. Between March and June 2014 she was the Director of the Communication Department.


OANA Ghiocea


Oana Ghiocea is 2nd year BA student in the field of Political Science at the National School of Political Science and Administrative Studies, in Bucharest. She has a great interest towards both Foreign Policy and Security, determined to pursue a career in the latter.

Oana has been a volunteer for as long as she remembers, but has only become a member of the UN Youth Association of Romania’s Communication Department in May 2014. Although she is practically a new member, she is keen on learning as much as possible and on doing everything in her power to help the association.

Some of her passions include mountain climbing, traveling and reading, whilst her motto is “Dare to get out of your comfort zone!”, truly believing that good things come only to those eager enough to find them.



Administrative Coordinator



Laura-Mădălina Dorneanu studies Law at the University of Bucharest since 2012. Even though she is one of the new members of the UN Youth Association Romania, she began her “career” as a volunteer when she was in high school. Since then she was involved in a series of activities of representing students.

The experience that she has gained from all the projects that she was involved in has proven to her that multiculturalism is a very important source of power and it should be promoted by strong moral and social values. That is why the involvement of young people is significant and the integrity is the main pillar in leading the society to something better.

Besides being interested in international relations, diplomacy and human rights, within her passions list she can count literature and journeys.

Dana-Ștefana Ghingheș is a 3rd year student at the Faculty of Law, University of Nicolae Titulescu in Bucharest. She is a member of the UN Youth Association of Romania since July 2013 and starting then she actively involved in all the projects under the aegis of the association. Dana used to be the Deputy Director of the Image Department until recently and she collaborated with the PR team for the advertising concepts that brought about valuable national and international visibility to each of the UNYARo projects and events. At the time being she is the Director of the General Secretariat of the UN Youth Association of Romania.







Social Activities Coordinator



Raluca Ana-Maria Cocuz is a senior year Political Science student at National School of Political Science and Public Administration in Bucharest. She became part of UN Youth Romania in June 2014 as a member in the Human Resources Department and since has participated as a volunteer organizer in the Summer School “Diplomacy in the 21st Century” 2014.

For the past two years she has developed a research interest in Romanian politics, as well as in the fields of Public Policy, Gender Studies and Human Rights. The activity performed as an intern at the Romanian Parliament gave her a glimpse of what could be her desired future career direction.

Raluca invested a large amount of time in volunteering for humanitarian causes and youth development. Apart from this, she has a very sharp artistic side nurtured during eight years as a soprano and also throughout photography, design and short documentary film.
